Macs Are No Longer Virus Free

November 6, 2006

Last week, Symantac released confirmed that another virus has been released and targeted at Macs.  OSX.Macarena is a proof of concept virus that infects files in the current folder on the compromised computer.  This is the 6th virus that has been released and targeted to Macs within the last 8 months.  No modern OS is safe anymore from viruses.  I guess Mac users will finally need to look into purchasing Anti-Virus software.

Fake version of Google hides Trojan horse

July 21, 2006

Apparently, someone has setup an exact copy of the download page for Google’s Toolbar plug-in in an attempt to lure users to download a Trojan back door.  “The Trojan itself — W32.Ranky.FW — is designed to turn the PC into a bot zombie, and is spread using the conventional technique of asking recipients of a spam email to follow an embedded link.”  For more information, click here.  This was posted as part of my ongoing series of “Protecting Your PC”.

It can be bundled with other software that you download or can come via an email attachment, etc. In this second part of my series on "Protecting Your PC," I am adding a link to watch a video from Microsoft on Protecting Against Spyware.
